Cowboys Hold Off Bulldogs For Homecoming Win

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team came up with a stop to preserve a 27-22 homecoming win over Texas Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium.

The Cowboys jumped out to an early 14-0 lead. Noah Garcia had rushes of 58 and 28 yards in the second drive of the game and the 28-yarder capped the drive with a touchdown. HSU came right back with a three-and-out on defense. Dameon Gomes returned the ensuing punt 58 yards to set up a short field and Colton Marshall scored on a 5-yard run and Grayson Bearden's PAT made it 14-0 with 5:30 remaining in the first half.

TLU responded with a touchdown drive. DaKory Willis scored on a 3-yard run. The Bulldogs went for two and scored with Willis scoring the conversion.

Both teams then exchanged punts but the Cowboys touched a punt by the Bulldogs and TLU recovered it at the HSU 8. TLU scored on a Caden Bosanko 8-yard run and the PAT gave TLU a 15-14 lead.

HSU came right back to take the lead. Dozie Ifeadi scored on a 24-yard pass from Gaylon Glynn on third down with a leaping catch in the end zone and Bearden's PAT made it 21-15 with 5:32 to play in the first half.

The defense forced a quick punt on the first drive of the third quarter by TLU and Garcia then made a spectacular catch and run that turned into a 44-yard touchdown reception to make the score 27-22 but the PAT was off the upright.

TLU responded with a touchdown on the ensuing possession as Bosanko hit Josh Wallace for a 5-yard touchdown pass.

Neither team scored the rest of the way but the Bulldogs had the ball last and drove all the way down to the HSU 12-yard line but the Cowboys came up with pressure on the final play of the game and Bosanko's pass fell incomplete.

Glynn finished the day 22-of-29 for 224 yards and two touchdowns. He was back under center for the first time since early in the Endicott game. Garcia had 111 yards rushing and 58 yards receiving.

Cason Hanna and Javion Mays each had nine tackles. It was the first career start for Mays.

Bosanko was 13-of-24 for 148 yards and a touchdown passing and he also ran 23 time for 97 yards and another touchdown. Joshua Stanton led the Bulldogs with eight tackles.

The Cowboys are now 5-1 overall and are 3-0 in American Southwest Conference action. The Bulldogs fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in league play. HSU will head to Alpine next week for its final matchup with longtime conference rival Sul Ross State. Kickoff is slated for noon.
