ABILENE, Texas – Colton Marshall had a walkoff game-winning touchdown in overtime as Hardin-Simmons' football team beat crosstown opponent McMurry, 19-16, on Saturday night to retain the Wilford Moore Trophy.
The two teams slugged it out for 60 minutes and that was not enough to decide the game. In overtime, McMurry had the ball first and had to settle for a 36-yard Jared Mendoza field goal.
The Cowboys were stopped on third down and sent out
Grayson Bearden for a 37-yarder to attempt to send the game to a second overtime. Bearden nailed the kick, but McMurry was called for leaping to give the Cowboys a first down. HSU scored three plays later as
Colton Marshall plowed into the end zone from two yards out to set off a Cowboy celebration.
HSU took the opening kickoff and went 51 yards in 14 plays and took 6:38 off the clock but turned the ball over on downs. The defense then forced a quick three-and-out and HSU had another long time-consuming drive that went 84 yards in 13 plays and
Noah Garcia capped the drive with a touchdown from 20 yards out. Bearden's PAT was missed.
McMurry answered with a 68-yard touchdown drive and Drew Hagler capped it with a 6-yard touchdown run to give McMurry a 7-6 lead after Jesse Rampy's PAT.
The Cowboys wasted no time scoring again to take the lead.
A.J. Hawkins hit K.J. Peoples for a 34-yard touchdown and Bearden hit the kick to give HSU a 13-7 lead. Bearden had a chance to extend the lead on the last play of the half but his 33-yard field goal was blocked by former Cowboy Marshall Tovar.
Jess Hoel tied the game back up with 2:18 in the third quarter when he hit Kristopher Martin for a 58-yard touchdown pass. The game remained tied at 13. HSU had the ball last in regulation and drive 71 yards in 13 plays to setup Bearden for a gamewinner on the last play of regulation but it was again blocked.
The Cowboys had 413 yards of offense on the night and had the ball for over 34 minutes. McMurry finished the night with 294 yards.
