Cowgirls Sweep Doubleheader

Feb. 22, 2008

Final Stats

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons swept a season-opening softball doubleheader from LeTourneau, 2-0 and 4-3, in non-conference action at Ellis Field on Friday afternoon.

In the opener freshman hurler Laura Rawlings was spectacular as she struck out eight in a complete-game shut out while scattering only four hits. She outpitched Kellye Keltner for the win as Keltner allowed only eight hits and two runs to the Cowgirls.

HSU scored the only runs of the game in the second inning when Lydia Bradley had a one-out double off the left field fence, moved to third on a Heather Cobb sacrifice bunt and scored on a Rawlings single. Rawlings then stole second and moved to third on a Kalyn Rosser single. She came around to score on a Cricket Criner single.

Sadye Hill and Rawlings each had two hits for the Cowgirls.

In the second game, LeTourneau got to Rosser as she allowed three runs on four hits and the defense committed two errors behind her in the first inning. After that she was outstanding throwing six straight shutout innings and allowing only four more hits - all singles - to earn the win in her collegiate debut.

Sadye Hill drove in a run for the Cowgirls in the bottom of the first and HSU tied the game in the third with a pair of runs. Senior Lydia Bradley had a two-run single in the inning. The game remained 3-3 until the bottom of the seventh inning.

Freshman Cera Beasley led off the inning with a walk and stole second. The throw down went into centerfield and Lindsay Haywood's attempt to throw out Beasley at third went into the dugout, forcing Beasley home with the game winning-run.

Rawlings and Kourtney Bailey each had two hits for the Cowgirls.

HSU is 2-0 on the year and will play in the LeTourneau Tournament next weekend. LETU fell to 0-2 on the year.
