Cowgirls Drop Pair To Concordia

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' softball team dropped an American Southwest Conference doubleheader to Concordia 3-2 and 10-5, Friday afternoon at Ellis Field.

In the second game, HSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Lydia Bradley led off the second with a solo home run to right field. Tana Thomas had an RBI single in the inning for the Cowgirls and Courtney Clark drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

Concordia answered with three runs in the top of the third. Jessica Zertuche had a two-run single in the inning and Jessica Rattan had an RBI single.

HSU's defense let them down in the fourth inning as the Tornados scored four unearned runs. After a two-out error by Cricket Criner put runners on first and second base with two outs, Rattan had a run-scoring double and Patranella had a two-run double. Another error let another run in to make it 7-3 after the top of the fourth inning.

The Cowgirls responded with two runs in the fourth, but also left the bases loaded. Cera Beasely had an RBI single and Clark had a sacrifice fly in the inning. Concordia added three unearned runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Karen Smart.

Patranella won the game in relief in the circle. Lacie Cole took the loss for the Cowgirls.

In the first game, both teams took advantage of a leadoff error by the left fielder to plate a run. Concordia scored on a Rattan RBI single and HSU scored on a Sadye Hill sacrifice fly.

Concordia scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Megan Pulido had a solo home run in the fifth and Karen Smart had a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Hill brought the Cowgirls to within 3-2 with a long home run to center field, her eighth of the season.

Cara Patranella (12-4) earned the win for Concordia with a complete-game four-hitter. Laura Rawlings went the distance for the Cowgirls scattering six hits and allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out six.

Hill had both Cowgirl RBIs in the game.

The two teams will play a noon doubleheader on Saturday. HSU is now 14-10 on the year and 8-6 in league play. Concordia improved to 21-7 and 14-4 in league play. --- HSU ---
