ABILENE, Texas -
Hardin-Simmons' softball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Ellis Field against Concordia, dropping the first game 5-2 and winning the nightcap 2-0.
The Cowgirls won the final game backed by a strong pitching performance from Laura Rawlings. The freshman scattered nine hits and struck out three in the complete-game win. She improved to 10-5 on the year.
Courtney Clark led off the HSU first with a single and stole second base. Heather Cobb moved her over to third with a ground out and Sadye Hill drove her in. The Cowgirls added the only other run of the game in the third inning when Cera Beasley led off with a single and stole second, moved to third on a Clark sacrifice bunt and scored on a Cobb RBI fielder's choice.
Hill and Clark had two hits each for the Cowgirls and Jessica Vasquez, Jessica Rattan and Melissa Leija each had two hits for Concordia. Rattan took the loss in the circle.
In the first game, Concordia score three runs on four hits and an error in the top of the first. They added a single run in the third on a Jessica Zertuche RBI single and Megan Pulido had a home run in the seventh.
HSU scored two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Lydia Bradley.
Rawlings took the loss for the Cowgirls, allowing four runs in three innings. Lacie Cole worked four innings and scattered four hits, allowing only one run. Cara Patranella won the game with a complete-game three-hit effort for Concordia.
The Cowgirls are no 15-11 on the year and 9-7 in league play. Concordia improved to 22-8 and 15-5 in conference play. HSU will play at Howard Payne next weekend.
