SAN ANTONIO, Texas —
Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team overcame a
17-point first half deficit, but could not hold on down the stretch
in a 79-69 loss to Trinity in the season opener for both teams
Friday evening in San Antonio.
Trinity lead 18-17 with 8:50 to play in the first half and then the
Tigers went on an 18-2 run to take a 36-19 lead with 4:05 to play
in the half. The Tigers hit four 3-pointers in the flurry,
including three by Ali Marzella.
HSU battled back behind post players Becky Taylor and Lindsey
Newcombe and went on a run of their own of 17-4 from the last two
minutes of the first half to the 15:39 mark of the second half to
retake the lead at 43-42.
It was a 66-65 Trinity lead with 5:21 to play, but the Tigers
scored the next 11 points to push the lead out to 77-65 with 1:24
to play.
Taylor, who transferred to the Cowgirls from UT-Tyler, had 26
points and 15 rebounds in her Cowgirl debut. Lindsey Newcombe added
16 points and 10 rebounds and Bo Warm had 15 points.
Marzella led Trinity with 26 points, she hit five 3-pointers and
scored 19 points in the first half. Danielle Hubenak had a
triple-double for Trinity with 18 points, 11 assists and 10
rebounds.
HSU will play St. Olaf at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Trinity will host
McMurry at 7 p.m.
