ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
men's basketball team hung with McMurry for much of the game
but Jamal Anene took over down the stretch as the Cowboys fell
87-72 in American Southwest Conference action Tuesday night at
Kimbrell Arena.
McMurry jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but HSU came right back with a
16-2 run to take a 18-9 advantage. The teams went back and forth
the rest of the first half and the Cowboys took a 37-36 lead into
the halftime locker room.
In the second half, HSU scored the first basket but McMurry went on
a quick 7-0 run and never trailed again in the game after the 18:55
mark. HSU's Ryan Carlson's shot in the paint made it
71-66 with 4:42, but McMurry scored the Cowboys 16-6 the rest of
the way to pull out the win.
HSU had no answer for Jamal Anene, who had nine points in the
deciding run. Anene had a career-best night going for 36 points and
12 rebounds.
Aaron Thornton put up career bests in points (23) and rebounds (14)
for the Cowboys. It was his third double-double of the season.
Casey Riddle had 17 points and Carlos Singer added 15.
HSU struggled from 3-point range in the game, going 6-for-30 and
also went 10-for-18 at the free throw line and had 22 turnovers in
the game.
Jeremie Hart had 19 points and former Cowboy Steven Luckey had 12
points for McMurry.
HSU is now 1-6 on the year and 1-4 in ASC play. McMurry is now 5-2
on the year and 3-1 in ASC play. HSU will be off until Dec. 28 when
it plays in the Cru Holiday Classic in Belton.
