BELTON, Texas — Hardin-Simmons jumped out
to an early 14-5 lead, but Wisconsin-LaCrosse closed the first half
on a 37-17 run and the Cowboys fell to 1-7 on the year with a 75-56
loss in the first day of the Cru Holiday Classic in Belton.
The Cowboys scored the game's first five points and opened
up a 14-5 lead with 14:29 remaining in the first half. The Eagles
would use a 10-0 run to take a 15-14 lead at the 10:23 mark and
UWLC would lead by as many as 14 points before settling for a 42-31
halftime lead. HSU would not get closer than 12 points the rest of
the way.
Aaron Thornton led the Cowboys with 18 points and Carlos Singer
added 15 points.
Tony Mane led all scorers with 20 points for the Eagles and Al
Chery came off the bench to score 18 after hitting his first seven
shots from the field. Trevor Stratton also reached double figures
for UWLC with 11 points.
UWLC shot 53 percent from the field in the first half and went
7-18 from 3-point range. The Cowboys shot 38 percent from the field
and were 7-23 from beyond the arc. HSU out rebounded UWLC 38-37 but
turned the ball over 22 times compared to just 11 turnovers for the
Eagles.
Hardin-Simmons will take on Millikin University in a 1:00 PM
start in tomorrow's opening game.
