Cowgirls Fall To UTT

ABILENE, Texas —
Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team dropped its third straight game to fall to 1-4 on the year with a 79-75 loss to Texas-Tyler in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex in Abilene on Thursday night.

The Cowgirls, who had never started league play 0-3 since joining the ASC before Thursday, have dropped three games In a row for the first time since 2001 and for the first time in the Shanna Briggs era.

The game was back and forth in the early going and UTT led 22-21 at the 8:20 mark of the first half, when the Patriots reeled off an 11-2 run to take a 32-23 lead with 6:04 to play in the half. HSU responded with a 10-1 run of its own to cut it to 34-33 with 2:28 to play in the half.

The Cowgirls took their first lead of the first half on a Bo Warm jumper with :33 to play in the half and Kara Looten's jumper at the buzzer gave HSU a 41-39 halftime lead.

HSU scored the first basket of the second half to take their biggest lead of the game at 43-39, but UTT came right back with a 14-2 run to make it 53-46 with 15:40 to play. HSU then chipped away at that deficit and retook the lead at 61-60 on a Caitlin Collins layup in transition with 10:10 to play.

UTT led 70-69 with 4:18 to play, but scored the next six points of the game to make it 76-69 with 1:36 yo play. UTT freshman Paige Parrish followed up a 19-point first half with 13 points in the second half for a 32 point night to pace the Patriots. Afritina Anderson and Melissa Thomas each scored 11 points for UTT and Lindsay Hausmann had 12 assists.

The Cowgirls were paced by All-American Lindsey Newcombe, who had 28 points and 12 rebounds, despite not starting for only the fourth time in her career. She played on a ginger ankle that she hurt in Monday's game with Louisiana College.

Sophomore guard Jasmine Lewis had the best game of her Cowgirl career with 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

UTT improved to 4-1 on the year and to 3-0 in ASC action. HSU will be off until a Dec. 12 game at Ozarks.
