BELTON, Texas — It was a tale of two
halves, unfortunately for the Hardin-Simmons men's basketball
team they had their good half in the first half and Millikin had
their way in the second half in an 83-74 win in the Cru Holiday
Classic in Belton.
Hardin-Simmons played its best half of the season in the first
half and took a 42-25 lead into halftime. HSU pushed its lead out
to 19 points early in the second half, but Millikin took control
after that. The Big Blue would cut the lead to single digits at
49-40 with 14:31 remaining in the game, but the Cowboys stretched
the lead back to 14 at 54-40 with 14:03 left to play.
The Big Blue would use a 12-3 run to close to 57-52 with 11:14
on the clock and Millikin would take its first lead of the second
half at 63-62 with 7:56 to play. The Big Blue would open up an
eight-point lead at 74-66 before the Cowboys pulled back to within
four at 76-72 with 1:51 on the clock. But the Cowboys would not get
any closer as Millikin pulled away in the final seconds.
Carlos Singer scored a game-high 25 points to lead HSU and Casey
Riddle added 19 points. Aaron Thornton also reached double figures
with 10 points for the Cowboys.
Charles Warren led Millikin with 20 points and he also grabbed
seven rebounds and added three steals. Joscar Demby had 19 points,
Sedric Ferguson scored 14 off the bench and Devin Demby had 10
points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Big Blue.
HSU shot just 40 percent in the second half and went 0-10 from
3-point range after shooting 57 percent from the field in the first
half including 6-of-14 from 3-point range. Millikin shot 63 percent
(22-35) from the field in the second half and finished at 52
percent for the game. The Big Blue also out rebounded the Cowboys
37-25 and went 20-26 from the free-throw line in the victory.
The game was delayed an hour and twenty minutes as there was a
mixup on the game times and no officials showed up.
HSU is now 1-8 on the year and Millikin improved to 5-6 on the
year.
