AUSTIN, Texas — Tim Kriegel threw a three-hit shutout as
Hardin-Simmons baseball team split an American Southwest Conference
doubleheader with Concordia on Sunday afternoon at Nelson Field,
falling 5-2 in the opener and winning the nightcap 4-0.
In the second game, Hardin-Simmons starter Tim Kriegel and
Concordia starter Ben Whiteley locked up in a pitcher's duel.
Whitely scattered 10 hits in the first four innings, but nine of
them were singles. He stranded six Cowboys on base in that time. He
then went on a stretch where he retired 11 straight batters. He
threw 127 pitches and left after a leadoff single in the ninth
inning.
Kriegel, who was starting less than 15 miles from his home town of
Round Rock, was in control after a rocky start. He walked the first
batter of the game and then allowed a single, but got out of the
jam in the first. It was the start of a streak that he retired nine
straight batters. He then worked around a leadoff error and another
hit in the fourth inning. He finished the game by retiring the
final 13 batters, to improve to 4-3 on the year.
HSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game in the bottom of
the second inning. Michael Morgan had a two-out triple and Kevin
Ellison drew a walk, then Brian Weeks and Matt Roam followed with
RBI singles for the Cowboys. HSU added a single run in the third on
a two-out RBI single by James Gage.
The Cowboys added another run in the fourth when Roam had a
one-out single and moved to second on a groundout by Regan Dixon.
J.T. Armstrong then drove him home with an RBI single.
Armstrong and Roam each had three hits for the Cowboys.
In the first game, Michael Johnson (5-1) struck out 11 batters in
the seven inning game to earn the win for Concordia. He went the
distance and scattered seven hits for Concordia. Eric Roten got the
loss for the Cowboys as he went the distance and scattered seven
hits and allowed five runs (four earned).
Sam Walker had two hits for the Cowboys and Williams had two hits
and two RBIs for Concordia.
Concordia scored three runs in the first inning. Micah Runnels led
off the game by reaching on an error and then Patrick Mercer and
Tom Williams followed with singles, with Williams driving home
Runnels. Killen Kinart followed with a sacrifice fly and Chad
Thielpape had an RBI single.
Roam had a RBI single for the Cowboys in the third. Williams led
off the Concordia third with a home run to right field. The Cowboys
added a single run in the fifth on a RBI triple by Weeks.
Concordia added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a one-out
RBI double by Collin Lippert to make it 5-2.
HSU is now 16-12 on the year and 7-5 in ASC West action. Concordia
is now 15-15 and 5-7 in league play. HSU is in a three-way tie for
second place in the ASC West with Mary Hardin-Baylor and McMurry.
The threesome is one game behind Texas Lutheran in the standings.
The Cowboys host Lubbock Christian on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
