ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Freshman Taylor Namey hit five home runs as
Hardin-Simmons swept an American Southwest Conference doubleheader
from Concordia on Friday afternoon in Round Rock, winning the first
game 8-7 and taking the nightcap 12-6.
In the first game, freshman catcher Taylor Namey tied a conference
record with three home runs in the game for the Cowgirls and HSU
rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh.
Namey hit her first home run in the top of the first with a runner
on to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead. Namey had another two run home
run in the third to make it 4-0. Carranda Goree had an RBI single
for Concordia in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1.
Concordia added a two-run single by Lauren Vansickle in the
fourth, but Namey followed with her third two-run home run in as
many at-bats to give HSU a 6-3 lead in the fifth. Concordia
answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth on a groundout
by Vansickle and a three-run home run by Jessica Rattan.
HSU came right back with two runs in the seventh. Cera Beasley led
off with a single and after a strikeout Amy Meyer singled to center
and the ball got through the centerfielder and she came all the way
around to score on a single and three-base error.
Laura Rawlings went six innings for the Cowgirls and earned the
win to move to 6-3 on the year. Sarah Shurbet worked a scoreless
seventh to pick up the save for HSU.
Namey was 4-for-4 with six RBIs in the first game.
Concordia took the lead in the second game on a two-run home run
homer by Vansickle. Goree added a solo home run in the inning. HSU
came back with three runs in the second on a Beasley RBI single and
a Meyer two-run single.
Goree had an RBI groundout for Concordia in the third to make it
4-3, but HSU took the lead on a three-run home run by Namey. Meyer
had an RBI in the fifth and Namey followed with a grand slam to
make it 11-4 in the fifth inning.
Katie Shurbet had an RBI groundout in the seventh for the Cowgirls
and Concordia added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a
two-run home run by Rattan.
Namey was 7-for-8 in the game with five home runs and 13 RBIs in
the doubleheader. Lacie Cole got the win for the Cowgirls with six
and one-third innings of relief. She scattered five hits and
allowed only three runs.
HSU is now 24-8 overall and 15-1 in ASC West play. Concordia fell
to 18-12 overall and 10-6 in league play. The Cowgirls host Howard
Payne next weekend at Ellis Field.
