Cowgirls Split at Concordia

ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons softball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Concordia on Thursday evening at Old Settler's Park in Round Rock, winning the first game 5-4 and falling 12-9 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Sarah Shurbet improved to 13-1 overall in the circle and the Cowgirls moved its winning streak to 17 games. Shurbet scattered five hits and allowed only three earned runs. Callie Rice had two hits and two RBIs for the Cowgirls.

Courtney Clark had an RBI double in the second to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead. Karen Smart had a solo home run for Concordia to tie it in the bottom of the second.

Rice had an RBI double in the third to give the Cowgirls the lead back, but Concordia came right back with a Jodi Heirholzer RBI groundout to tie it at 2-2.

HSU scored two runs in the fifth on a RBI single by Rice and Amy Meyer reaching on an error. Taylor Namey homered for the Cowgirls in the sixth to make it 5-2.

Jessica Rattan had a two-run home run in the sixth to make it 5-4, but the Tornados could get no closer.

The Cowgirls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game. Amy Meyer singled and stole second with one out. Taylor Namey followed with a walk and Shayla Lee added a three-run home run, but Jessica Rattan answered with a three-run shot to tie it in the bottom of the first.

Vansickle had a two-run shot in the second for Concordia. Katie Shurbet tripled for the Cowgirls in the third and scored on a Callie Rice sac fly. Concordia added two more home runs in the third to make it 8-4.

HSU tied the game at 8-8 in the fourth on a two-run home run by Clark. Lee added a two-run single and added an unearned run in the sixth, but Concordia hit three more home runs – two solo shots in the fifth and a two-run shot by Rattan in the sixth. Concordia hit seven home runs in the game.

Lacie Cole took the loss for the Cowgirls. Lee had five RBIs to pace the Cowgirl offense.

HSU is now 22-8 on the year and 13-1 in ASC West play. Concordia is now 18-10 overall and 10-4 in league play. The teams play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
