IRVING, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' softball team went
toe-to-toe with two of the nation's best teams, but in the
end the Cowgirls saw their American Southwest Conference
Championship Tournament run end with a 1-2 performance on Friday at
Trinity View Park in Irving.
Louisiana College 3, Hardin-Simmons 0
The Cowgirls opened the day with a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Louisiana
College. Rene Schawrtzenburg kept the Cowgirls in check offensively
as she limited HSU to four infield singles.
It was 0-0 in the fifth when the Wildcats scored a couple of runs.
Jodi Montagnino and Caitlin Bankston had a single and double
back-to-back with one out. Then Mary Alice Roy scored Bankston with
a groundout and Ashleigh Clement added an RBI single. LC added
another run in the seventh when Bankston reached on a two out
error, moved to third on a single by Roy and scored on the back end
of a double steal.
Sarah Shurbet went the distance for the Cowgirls and took the loss
to fall to 15-3 on the year. She allowed only two earned runs.
HSU 4, Howard Payne 2
In an elimination game, it was the Amy Meyer show as the Cowgirls
handed ASC West rival Howard Payne a 4-2 loss. Meyer had a solo
home run in the first, a two-run single in the third and an RBI
single in the fifth, driving in all four Cowgirl runs.
That was all of the support starter Lacie Cole would need. She
allowed two runs in the third inning, but was dominant other than
that. She retired the final 13 batters of the game. She allowed
only four hits over seven innings and improved to 8-3 on the
year.
East Texas Baptist 5, HSU 1 (10)
The final game of the day was a heartbreaker for the Cowgirls as
they took No. 2 East Texas Baptist to 10 innings before finally
falling 5-1. The Cowgirls left 10 runners on base and a had a
runner in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and
eighth innings and could not get the key hit to tie the game. In
three of those innings the runner was at second with less than two
outs.
Meyer scored the Cowgirls only run with a home run in the bottom of
the first to tie the game at 1-1. ETBU's Adrienne Meier
homered in the first to make it 1-0. Neither team scored again
until the 10th when ETBU plated four runs.
Brooke Martin had a three-run home run in the inning that was the
big blow to the Cowgirls.
Sophomore hurler Laura Rawlings went the distance for the Cowgirls.
She fell to 7-4 after allowing nine hits and five runs over 10
innings.
The Cowgirls are now 31-12 on the season and they wait until Monday
to find out if they are selected for the NCAA Tournament. If not,
the Cowgirls will close the season but everyone returns as the
Cowgirls do not have a senior on the team.
