KERRVILLE, Texas —
Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team jumped
on Schreiner early and never looked back in a 75-47 American
Southwest Conference win on Thursday night in Kerrville.
The win was the third in a row for the Cowgirls and improved the
HSU record to 7-6 overall and 4-5 in ASC action. Schreiner fell to
0-14 overall and 0-10 in the league.
HSU jumped out to a 17-2 lead in the first half, behind a strong
effort from junior post Lindsey Newcombe. She scored 10 of her
game-high 21 points in that opening run. The Cowgirls never led by
less than 14 points after the strong early run.
Newcombe went over the 1,000-point mark for her career with a
basket early in the second half.
The Cowgirls dominated on the inside with a 44-26 advantage on
the backboards. HSU shot 51 percent for the game and limited
Schreiner to 22 percent shooting. The Mountaineers only made three
field goals in the first half.
HSU played 16 players in the game and 13 of them found the
scoring column. Alexis Popelar had nine points in her Cowgirl
debut. Angela Newcombe hit double figures with 11 points.
HSU will play at Texas Lutheran on Saturday at 1 p.m.
