SEGUIN, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
women's basketball team snapped a 22-game winning streak
against Texas Lutheran as they fell to the Lady Bulldogs 80-79 in
overtime Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action
at Memorial Gym in Seguin.
The Cowgirls fell behind early, trailing 21-6 and 31-13 in the
first half, but battled back to trail only 40-35 at the halftime
break.
HSU tied the game on four different occasions in the second half,
including at 73 all with 1:14 on two free throws by Lindsey
Newcombe. HSU never led in regulation. HSU took its first lead on a
Newcombe jumper on the first overtime possession, but Kimberly
Hagan countered with a 3-pointer to take the lead.
The teams traded baskets from there and Hagan's jumper with
:55 to play gave TLU an 80-79 lead. HSU could not convert on its
next two possessions and TLU took the win.
Newcombe led the Cowgirls with a season-best 29 points and 18
rebounds. Jasmine Lewis had 13 points and Bo Warm added 11. Hagan
led TLU with 19 points and Tamisha Simpson added 18.
HSU shot 38.6 percent in the game and turned the ball over 27
times.
Texas Lutheran is now 8-6 on the year and 7-4 in ASC play. HSU
fell to 7-7 overall and 4-6 in ASC action. The Cowgirls will stay
on the road with a game at Howard Payne next Thursday.
