SEGUIN, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
men's basketball team could not ice away the game in
regulation and Texas Lutheran tied the game at 77 with 4.5 seconds
to play and went on to dominate the overtime period en route to a
96-87 American Southwest Conference action in Seguin.
HSU had no answer on the interior for Texas Lutheran's inside
game as the Bulldogs outscored HSU 54-28 in the paint and the post
players hit for 10 more free throws. Starting post players Henry
Flores had 26 points and Issac Williams added 22. George Davis the
lone post reserve used by the Bulldogs had 14 points, including
eight in overtime.
The game should have never made it to overtime. The Cowboys jumped
out to an 8-1 lead, but TLU came right back and eventually
stretched out its lead to 11 points in the first half before the
Cowboys cut it to 30-26 at halftime.
HSU came right out of the halftime locker room and went on a 20-6
run to stretch the lead to 50-36 with 15 minutes to play as three
straight 3-pointers by John Derr capped the run.
From then on TLU pounded the ball inside and they chipped away at
the Cowboy lead. They never retook the lead and HSU led 77-73 after
Casey Riddle split a pair of free throws. TLU came right back and
got a quick layup by Jarell English and then fouled Riddle again
and he missed both free throws with :!2 to play. English then
scored another lay-up off of his own miss with four second to play
and the Cowboys did not get off a shot.
Derr led the Cowboys with a career best 29 points. He also tied the
school single-game 3-point record by hitting seven triples in the
game. Riddle had 19 points and nine rebounds, but was just 4-for-11
at the free throw line. Aardon Thornton had 15 points and 12
rebounds for his fifth double-double this season.
The Cowboys fall to 2-12 overall and 2-8 in ASC action. TLU
improved to 5-10 overall and 3-8 in ASC play. HSU plays at Howard
Payne on Thursday in Brownwood.
