ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' men's
basketball team had one of its worst shooting games of the season
and it turned into a rout as Sul Ross State handed the Cowboys a
72-57 American Southwest Conference loss on Saturday afternoon in
Alpine.
The Lobos moved out to an 18 point lead in the first half and the
Cowboys were never able to recover. HSU trailed 38-24 at halftime.
Sul Ross State pushed the lead out to as many as 24 points in the
second half.
Aaron Thornton led the Cowboys with 15 points. All 10 Cowboys that
played scored.
HSU had a rough shooting game as they went just 6-of-33 from
3-point range and shot just 33.9 percent in the game. Sul Ross
State had 19 assists on 28 made shots in the game and shot 45.2
percent.
Steven Johunkin led the Lobos with 22 points and Chris Jones and
Any Hulsey each scored 10 points.
The Cowboys fell to 3-13 overall and 3-9 in ASC play. Sul Ross
State improved to 6-11 on the year and to 5-8 in ASC action. HSU
had a chance to move into fourth place in the ASC West with the
win, but instead fall a game and a half behind the Lobos.
HSU will return home on Thursday to play Concordia at 7:30 p.m., it
is the start of the final stretch of the season where HSU will play
seven of its last nine games at home.
