ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
women's basketball team overcame a sluggish first half and
pulled away late for a 76-63 American Southwest Conference win at
Sul Ross State on Saturday afternoon in the Gallegos Center.
HSU center Lindsey Newcombe dominated the first half for the
Cowgirls as she recorded 21 points and 15 rebounds in the first
half. However, the Cowgirls struggled from the perimeter going
2-for-15 from 3-point range in the first half and Sul Ross State
trailed only 37-35 at halftime.
In the second half, Newcombe picked up her fourth foul of the game
in the first two minutes of the half. She never returned, but the
Cowgirls picked up from the perimeter and was able to run away from
the Lobos.
Newcombe finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds and Bo Warm added
16 points, with 13 of those coming in the second half. Freshman
Alexis Popelar added 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench for
the Cowgirls.
Liz Pereyra had 23 points and eight rebounds for Sul Ross
State.
The Cowgirls are now 9-7 overall and 6-6 in league play. Sul Ross
State fell to 1-16 overall and 1-12 in ASC play. HSU will return
home for the first time in two weeks on Thursday when it hosts
Concordia at 5:30 p.m.
