BELTON, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' women's
basketball team dropped a 68-60 American Southwest Conference game
to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee
Complex.
It is the first time that UMHB has beaten the Cowgirls at the Mabee
Complex. The Lady Cru came up with a decisive 14-3 run from the
6:30 mark to the 1:04 mark to break open what was a 54-52 UMHB
lead.
Both teams had gone back and forth the whole game. In the first
half there were eight ties and six lead changes. UMHB scored at the
halftime buzzer to take a 31-29 lead. In the second half, it was
more of the same until UMHB made their decisive run.
The Cru shot 61 percent in the second half and 56.4 percent in the
game and that was the difference as the Cowgirls shot just 35.7
percent in the second half and 36.8 percent in the game.
The Cowgirls were led by Angela Newcombe's 14 points and
Becky Taylor, Jasmine Lewis and Bo Warm each had 10. Jessica Kelly
led four UMHB players in double figures with 15 points. Lindsay
Eaton, Caitlin Barganier and Kellie Thomas each had 14.
HSU is now 10-8 on the year and 7-7 in ASC West action. The Cru
held on to first-place in the ASC West with a 12-3 mark and moved
to 15-4 overall. HSU will host crosstown rival McMurry on Monday at
5:30 p.m.
