ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' men's
basketball team dropped a hard-fought game to cross-town rival
McMurry, 91-79 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee
Complex on Monday evening.
McMurry led 42-37 at the break and scored the first basket oif the
second half to make it 44-37, but HSU battled back to cut it to a
one-point deficit and had seven different shots to take the lead
and could not get one to fall to get them over the hump.
After a Carlos Singer basket, HSU trailed 60-59 with 7:53 to play
but from then on McMurry was very efficient on the offensive end to
seal the win. Three straight baskets gave McMurry a 66-59 lead and
Singer then hit a 3-pointer. Jeremie Hart hit a basket and John
Derr hit a 3-pointer.
Anene scored and Steven Luckey added a layup to make it 72-65, Derr
sandwiched a pair of 3-pointer around a Hart lay-up and it was a
three-point game, but the Cowboys would get no closer. Hart scored
seven points from the 1:55 mark to the :54 second mark. McMurry was
11-for-12 in the last two minutes at the free throw line.
Carlos Singer led the Cowboys with 23 points, John Derr had 19
points and MeKale Hall added 15.
Hart led McMurry with 35 points, including 24 in the second half.
He also had 12 rebounds for McMurry. Ryan Boyd had 14 points and 10
rebounds and Jamal Anene added 17 points and eight rebounds. Steven
Luckey had 13 points.
HSU is now 4-15 on the year and 4-11 in ASC play. McMurry improved
to 13-6 overall and 11-4 in ASC action. The Cowboys play at
Concordia on Thursday.
