ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
women's basketball team dropped an American Southwest
Conference game to crosstown rival McMurry, 62-57, on Monday night
at the Mabee Complex.
McMurry took control of the game a 9-0 run to take an 11-6 lead
early in the game and the Cowgirls were never closer than four
points the rest of the way.
The teams traded 14 straight buckets through the 3:36 mark of the
first half and McMurry led 25-19. McMurry then scored six straight
points to take a 12-point lead with 1:40 to play in the first half
and led 33-25 at halftime.
McMurry never led by more than 12 points in the second half but
maintained at least a five-point lead the entire second half. The
Cowgirls had chances to cut the deficit several times, but went
9-for-17 at the free throw line in the second half and 13-for-23 in
the game.
The Cowgirls had a balanced attack with freshman Alexis Popelar
leading the way with 17 points. Angela and Lindsey Newcombe each
had 12 points for the Cowgirls.
LaPorsha Alexander led McMurry with 20 points, 16 of which came in
the first half. Anna Bertel added 14 points.
HSU is now 10-9 on the year and 7-8 in ASC play. McMurry improved
to 12-7 overall and to 8-6 in league action. The Cowgirls play at
Concordia on Thursday.
