ABILENE, Texas — For all intents and purposes the playoffs for the Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team started on Thursday, and the Cowgirls passed the first test with an 86-49 win over Schreiner in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex.

The Cowgirls are now tied with Texas Lutheran for the fourth and final spot into the ASC Tournament from the ASC West. The two teams will play on Saturday at 1 p.m. and the winner will advance to the ASC Tournament next week and the loser's season is over.

HSU came out and dominated from early on against Schreiner. The game was tied at eight at the first media timeout, but the Cowgirls took command with a 29-9 run from the 14:45 mark to the 5:45 mark. The Cowgirls eventually led 45-24 at halftime.

The second half was more of the same as the jumped out to a 15-4 run out of the halftime break and pushed the lead to 62-30.

Lindsey Newcombe led four Cowgirls into double figures with 16 points. Kara Looten added 12, Jasmine Lewis 11 and Bo Warm 10. Hsu shot 48 percent for the game and outrebound the Mountaineers 44-27. HSU committed a season-low five turnovers in the game.

Hannah Burleson led Schreiner's balanced attack with nine points.

HSU is now 14-10 on the year and 11-9 in league play. Schreiner fell to 1-23 overall and 1-19 in ASC action.
