ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
women's basketball team came out strong and never looked back
in a 90-66 win over Texas Lutheran Saturday afternoon at the Mabee
Complex.
The win gave the Cowgirls the fourth seed out of the ASC West into
the American Southwest Conference Tournament and the Cowgirls go
into the tournament playing their best basketball of the
season.
The game was really over in the opening minutes when the Cowgirls
jumped out to a 10-2 lead and they eventually pushed the opening
kick to 33-8 at the 8:21 mark of the first half. In that opening
run the Cowgirls hit five 3-pointers.
TLU never cut the Cowgirl lead to less than 20 the rest of the way
and HSU led 54-26 at halftime. In the first half, HSU shot 7-of-11
from 3-point range and Texas Lutheran, who has lived on the
3-pointer throughout the season was just 1-of-8 in the first
half.
It was more of the same in the second half as Bo Warm hit four of
her seven 3-pointers in the second half. The senior finished her
last game at the Mabee Complex with 21 points, six assists and five
rebounds.
HSU dominated on the glass, outrebounding TLU, 58-40. Both
starting post players had double-doubles for the Cowgirls. Lindsey
Newcombe had 15 points and 17 rebounds and senior Becky Taylor had
14 points and 13 rebounds in her final home game as a Cowgirl.
Alexis Popelar added 15 points off the bench.
HSU is now 15-10 on the year and finished 12-9 in ASC action.
Texas Lutheran fell to 12-12 overall and 11-10 in league play.
The Cowgirls have now advanced to the ASC Tournament every year of
its existence and they will take on ASC East champion and host
school Louisiana College on Friday at 7:30.
