PINEVILLE, La. — Louisiana College went
on an 8-0 run midway through the second half to open up a tied game
and held off Hardin-Simmons, 72-69, in the first round of the
American Southwest Conference Tournament on Friday evening in
Pineville.
The Cowgirls trailed 68-53 with 5:13 to play, but a 16-2 run over
the next four minutes cut the deficit to 70-69 with :42 seconds to
play. LC went on a 20-9 run from the 12:03 mark to the 5:13 mark to
open up the big lead.
LC's Roslyn Wilmer hit a pair of free throws with 35 seconds
to play. HSU had a 3-pointer blocked in the next possession and
Christy Pantallion grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She missed
the front-end of the 1-and-1 and HSU did not get a shot off as time
expired.
The Cowgirls, who were outrebounded 35-18 in the first half, did a
much better job on the glass in the second half and finished the
game down being outrebounded only 49-41. HSU also shot 47.2 percent
in the second half, but Louisiana College hit 64 percent in the
second half and were able to keep the Cowgirls from taking the
lead.
Alexis Popelar led the Cowgirls with 16 points and Lindsey Newcombe
added 14 (all in the second half). Jasmine Lewis added 12 points
for HSU. Newcombe only played 21 minutes in the game after being
limited to seven minutes in the first half and 21 in the game.
LC was led by their consisted trio of Christy Pantallion, Voneshia
Williams and Tillisha Givens. Pantallion had 16 points, nine
rebounds, seven assists and five steals; Williams had 14 points and
14 rebounds and Givens added 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Bo Warm ended her career with eight points and five assists and
Becky Taylor had three points and 11 rebounds in her final career
game.
HSU ends its season with a record of 15-11 and LC advances to the
semifinals to play Howard Payne. LC is 22-2 on the year and ranked
No. 15 in the nation.
