LONGVIEW, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
nationally-ranked softball team moved to 5-0 on the year with a
three wins on Saturday at the rain-delayed LeTourneau Invitational
in Longview.
Teams were scheduled to play four games over two days, but rain
and travel schedules forced a change of plans. HSU defeated Trinity
(6-2), Austin College (8-0) and LeTourneau (5-4).
Complete stats will not be available until Sunday, but HSU had to
go the small ball route with five sacrifice bunts and took
advantage of four Trinity errors. Taylor Namey, Kelsy Cogdell and
Amy Meyer had RBI singles.
Laura Rawlings made her first start of the season and allowed two
runs in two and two-third innings. Lacie Cole (2-0) came on and
worked four and one-third innings of scoreless relief to earn the
win. Cole also had a single and a sacrifice fly in the game.
In the second game, Megann Lewis was dominating in a 8-0
six-inning run-rule win. She allowed only one hit and struck out
eight to move to 2-0 on the year.
Courtney Clark had two hits, including a double. Cole had an RBI
double and Jodi Heirholzer had an RBI double.
Sarah Shurbet got the win for the Cowgirls in the final game as
she went the distance.
Meyer had an RBI triple, Megan Ullmer had an RBI single and
Courtney Clark had an RBI double for the Cowgirls. Cogdell hit her
first home run as a Cowgirl and Kayla Scaramuzzo scored a pair of
runs to propel the offense.
HSU is now 5-0 and will play in the ASC First Pitch Tournament
next weekend.
