AUSTIN, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons'
women's basketball team used a 13-1 run midway through the
second half to take control of an eventual 80-72 win over Concordia
on Thursday night in American Southwest Conference action at the
Concordia Fieldhouse in Austin.
HSU trailed 59-52 with 10:14 to play, but the Cowgirls used the
13-1 run to take a 65-60 lead with 5:42 to play. HSU held the
Tornados without a field goal from the 10:14 mark to the 3:25 mark
of the game.
The Cowgirls got a balanced effort with five players scoring in
double figures. Popelar led the way with 18 points, including 14 in
the second half. Lindsey Newcombe had 17 points and nine rebounds
and Jasmine Lewis scored 16 points. Angela Newcombe had a
double-double with 12 points and a career-best 16 rebounds. Becky
Taylor had 11 points.
HSU dominated the game on the backboards as it outrebounded
Concordia 51-30. HSU also picked up the game defensively in the
second half as Concordia went just 1-for-6 from 3-point range in
the second half after going 6-for-9 from distance in the first
half.
Concordia put six of the seven players it played into double
figures with Brianna Smith leading the way with 17 points. Skylar
Lott added 13 points and Margaret Milling had 10 points, nine
assists, seven steals and six rebounds.
The Cowgirls kept their postseason hopes alive with the win as they
improved to 11-9 overall and 8-8 in ASC action. Concordia fell to
7-13 overall and 5-11 in ASC play. HSU will play at ASC West leader
Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at 1 p.m.
