BELTON, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
women's basketball team dropped an 82-70 American Southwest
Conference game to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday afternoon at the
Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
The game was very similar to the one the two teams played a week
ago in Abilene. The teams went back and forth the entire first half
and Stacie Stephens hit a late 3-pointer to give the Cru a 34-31
halftime lead.
Neither team could gain much of an advantage early in the second
half and Angela Newcombe's layup made it 46-42 with 14:01 to
play. That is when UMHB took over for good with a 13-2 run to take
a 57-44 lead with 11:27 to play. HSU never recovered and only got
the deficit to single digits one more time the rest of the way.
Lindsay Eaton led the Cru with 27 points, 20 of which came in the
second half, and Kallie White added 17. It was the 13th win in a
row for UMHB, which leads the ASC West by one game over Howard
Payne. Those two teams will close the regular season with a game in
Brownwood, possibly for the ASC West title.
The Cowgirls were led by Angela Newcombe, who had a career-best 19
points. Jasmine Lewis added 18 points and Bo Warm and Alexis
Popelar each had 11 points.
HSU is now 11-10 on the year and 8-9 in ASC action. UMHB improved
to 17-4 overall and 14-3 in ASC action. The Cowgirls close the
season with four straight home games, beginning Thursday night
against Howard Payne.
