BROWNWOOD, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
softball team swept a doubleheader from Howard Payne, 5-1 and 7-0,
to complete a four-game American Southwest Conference series sweep
Saturday afternoon in Brownwood.
In the first game, Megann Lewis (10-4) was again stellar in the
circle as she went the distance and scattered seven hits, while
allowing only one run.
HSU scored in the first when Megan Ulmer led off with a single
and stole second. She moved to third on a Courtney Clark groundout
and Kelsey Cogdell singled her home. It stayed 1-0 until the bottom
of the fifth when HPU scored a run on a Haliegh Caraway single.
The Cowgirls scored a run in the sixth when Cogdell doubled and
moved to third on a passed ball. She scored on a Lacie Cole squeeze
bunt to make it 2-1. HSU added three more runs in the top of the
seventh on a three-run home run by Taylor Namey.
Namey and Cogdell each had two hits and Namey's home run
was her fourth of the season.
In the second game, the Cowgirls got a combined shutout out of
Sarah Shurbet (6-0) and Laura Rawlings. Shurbet allowed two hits
and no runs in her four innings of work. Rawlings worked the final
three innings allowing just two hits to earn the save.
HSU jumped to a 5-0 lead after three innings. In the first,
Shelby McIntyre singled home Ulmer and Namey. Clark had an RBI
single in the second to make it 3-0 and McIntyre had a two-run home
run in the third.
The Cowgirls made it 7-0 on a two-run single by Namey in the
sixth.
Namey had four hits for the Cowgirls in the game and McIntyre
had three hits and drove in four.
The Cowgirls are now 21-6 on the year and 14-2 in ASC West play.
Howard Payne fell to 9-18 overall and 6-12 in ASC play. HSU will
host ASC West-leader Mary Hardin-Baylor next weekend in a four-game
set.
