ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
softball team split a four-game series with Concordia as the teams
split a doubleheader for the second straight day in American
Southwest Conference action at Ellis Field. HSU won the first game
3-0 and Concordia won 6-5 in the nightcap.
Megann Lewis (8-4) was dominant for the Cowgirls with her fourth
shutout of the season. She scattered six hits and struck out seven.
The Cowgirls scored all three runs in the fifth inning. Jodi
Hierholzer singled to leadoff the inning and moved to second on a
fielder's choice and error. Hierholzer came around to score
when Courtney Clark reached on an error. Ulmer came around to score
on a wild pitch and Kelsey Cogdell drove home Clark with a
groundout.
Kat Moreno went the distance and allowed only three runs and
four hits for Concordia.
In the nightcap the Cowgirls late rally came up just short,
Concordia led 6-0 before the Cowgirls rallied with two runs in the
fifth and sixth and one more in the seventh.
In the fifth, Shelby McIntyre drove in a run when she reached on
an error. Kayla Scaramuzzo also scored on a wild pitch. In the
sixth, Taylor Namey had an RBI single and Amy Meyer added a
sacrifice fly to make it 6-4.
In the seventh inning, Callie Rice doubled with two outs and
moved to third on a Cera Beasley single to center. Courtney Clark
doubled home Rice and Beasley moved to third, before Namey popped
out to end the game.
Laura Rawlings (1-1) started and took the loss for HSU. She
worked three and one-third innings, allowing six hits and four
runs. Lacie Cole, Sarah Shurbet and Megann Lewis all worked in
relief for the Cowgirls. Haylee Staton got the win for Concordia.
She allowed five runs, but only one was earned. She retired the
first 14 batters of the game.
HSU is now 17-6 on the year and 10-2 in ASC West action on the
season. Concordia is now 15-11 overall and 12-4 in ASC West play.
HSU will play at Howard Payne next weekend.
