LEWISVILLE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
softball team dropped a 3-2 game to No. 2 Louisiana College in 11
innings in the first round of the American Southwest Conference
Tournament at Railroad Park in Lewisville.
LC scored first in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by
Allison Frye. HSU took the lead in the fourth inning with a pair of
runs. Cera Beasley led off the inning with a double and she move to
third on a single by Kelsey Cogdell. Cogdell then stole second base
and HSU scored back-to-back runs on squeeze bunts by Taylor Namey
and Amy Meyer.
It stayed 2-1 until there were two outs in the bottom of the
seventh when Mary Alice Roy had an RBI triple to tie the game.
LC won the game in the bottom of the ninth when Leslie Eastham
singled with two outs and Bailey Woodward pinch ran for her. Devan
Greene then hit a double to center field and Woodward scored a
controversial run to end the game. The throw was dropped on a
collision, and she was called safe. Video evidence showed that
Woodward never touched the plate, but the call stood and LC won the
game 3-2.
Cera Beasley had three hits and Taylor Namey had two for the
Cowgirls. Roy, Greene and Montagnino had two each for LC. Both
teams had 10 hits in the game.
Rene Schwartzenberg and Megann Lewis each went the distance.
Schwartzenberg 15 and earned the win. Lewis struck out 11 in the
loss.
HSU is now 24-12 and will play at 2 p.m. tomorrow against an
opponent to be determined by morning play. LC is 36-5 and will play
Mary Hardin-Baylor at 11 a.m. on Friday.
