BROWNWOOD, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
softball team swept Howard Payne 9-1 and 5-0 in American Southwest
Conference action Friday afternoon in Brownwood.
In the first game, Megan Lewis did not allow an earned run in
six innings. She allowed only four hits and one unearned run while
striking out four to improve to 9-4 on the year. The game ended in
the sixth inning because of the run rule.
The Cowgirls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second with a
two-run single by senior Callie Rice. HSU added two more runs in
the third. Kelsey Cogdell had an RBI double and Amy Meyer had a
sacrifice fly. Taylor Namey had an RBI single in the fourth to make
it 5-0.
HPU scored its lone run in the fourth after an error and a
triple. HSU put the run rule in effect in the sixth with four more
runs. Jodi Hierholzer, Courtney Clark and Shelby McIntyre each had
RBI singles and the Cowgirls also scored on an error.
McIntyre and Clark each had three hits for the Cowgirls as they
pounded out 14 hits.
In the second game, Sarah Shurbet threw a complete-game shutout,
allowing only three hits and striking out five to improve to 5-0 on
the year.
Cogdell put the Cowgirls on the board in the first with an RBI
single. The Cowgirls added four runs in the third. Cogdell had a
two-run single, McIntyre had an RBI single and the Cowgirls added
another run on an error.
Cogdell had two hits and drove in three runs.
The Cowgirls are now 19-6 overall and 12-2 in ASC West action.
Howard Payne fell to 9-16 overall and 6-10 in ASC play. The teams
will play a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
