Cowgirls Win Second Straight

ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team won its second straight game as it beat East Texas Baptist 70-54 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex.

The Cowgirls jumped out to a 13-4 lead and ETBU tied the game on two different occasions but HSU never lost the lead in the game. Alexis Popelar's lay-up at the halftime buzzer gave HSU a 33-31 lead.

HSU used a 14-4 run early in the second half to take its first double-digit lead at 47-37 with 12:30 to play. From that point on the Cowgirls never led by less than six points.

The Cowgirls put the game away at the free throw line as HSU hit 8-of-10 in the final 2:40 to keep the Tigers at a distance.

HSU had four players in double figures. Kara Looten and Angela Newcombe each had double-doubles. Looten had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Newcombe had 13 points and 14 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals. Jasmine Lewis had 18 points to lead the Cowgirls and Alexis Popelar had 14 points.

Brandace Latin had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Erika Brown had 16 rebounds for ETBU.

The Cowgirls are now 4-4 on the year and 2-3 in ASC action. East Texas Baptist fell to 3-4 overall and 2-4 in ASC action. HSU will take the week off for final exams and will return to action on Dec. 19 at McMurry at 5:30 p.m.
