Box Score 2 MARSHALL, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' softball teams dropped a pair of games at defending champion East Texas Baptist, 9-2 and 5-3, in season-opening non-conference action in Marshall on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, Laura Rawlings got the start for the Cowgirls in the first game and allowed eight earned runs in two innings of work. Sarah Shurbet went four innings and allowed only four hits and one earned run.
Blair Wallace, Taylor Namey and Shelby McIntyre each had two hits for the Cowgirls.
Namey gave the Cowgirls their only two runs on a two-run home run in the third inning.
ETBU scored all of their runs in two innings. The Tigers scored four times in the first as Rawlings, walked in a batter and hit in a batter with the bases loaded and then ETBU had a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly. ETBU scored five runs on four hits and two balks in the third.
In the nightcap, Megann Lewis went the distance. She allowed 10 hits and five runs (four earned). Jordan Bullard got the win for ETBU allowing nine hits and three runs in seven innings of work.
ETBU won the game in the seventh inning on a walkoff two-run home run by Lauryn McCurry.
Beck Young gave ETBU a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single. The Cowgirls tied it in the second on an Amy Meyer RBI single. ETBU scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to make it 3-2.
HSU had tied it at 2-2 in the third on a McIntyre single. Namey tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI double in the fifth.
Namey and Kelsey Evans had a pair of hits for HSU in the game.
The Cowgirls (0-2) will host Southwestern on Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
