Box Score 2 ROUND ROCK, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' softball team split an American Southwest Conference West Division doubleheader at Concordia, losing 6-5 in the first game and then bouncing back with a 1-0 win, in action at Old Settler's Park in Round Rock on Thursday evening.
In the nightcap, HSU scored the only run of the game in the second inning. Taylor Namey reached with a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Cera Beasley reached on an error by pitcher Taylor Schiefelbein.
Sarah Shurbet continued her strong pitching in ASC West action for the Cowgirls. She scattered five hits in the complete-game shutout. She has allowed just one run in 24 innings of work in ASC West play and is 3-0. She is now 5-5 overall on the season.
Schiefelbein went the distance and scattered four hits and the one run she allowed was unearned. She is now 10-3 on the year.
In the first game, the Cowgirls jumped out to a five-run lead in the first inning, but the Tornados rallied and won the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Amy Meyer, Laura Rawlings, Blair Wallace and Taylor Namey started the game off with four straight singles for the Cowgirls. Namey had an RBI, then Mac Clay walked with the bases loaded. Leslie Henderson had an RBI groundout and Kelsey Cogdell had a two-run double in the inning.
Jessica Rattan had an RBI single in the first Erin Duhon had a two-run single in the third and Meghan Ferrell had an RBI double and Alex Smith had an RBI single in the fifth.
In the seventh, Duhon doubled to center with one out and Ferrell reached on an error that pushed Duhon to third. After a groundout, Smith had a two-out RBI single for the walk-off win.
Kat Moreno, who had the rough first inning, settled in and allowed only one hit the final six innings to earn the win. She allowed five runs on six hits to improve to 9-5. Megann Lewis went the distance and allowed six runs (five earned) and struck out four in six and two-third innings of work. She is now 7-5 on the year.
Cogdell had two hits and two RBIs for the Cowgirls and Duhon and Smith had three hits and two RBIs each for Concordia.
HSU is now 15-11 on the year and 9-1 in league play. Concordia is now 20-8 overall and 11-3 in ASC West action. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
