Box Score 2 FARMER'S BRANCH, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team knocked off defending national champion East Texas Baptist, 2-0, to earn a split at the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament at Oran Good Park in Farmer's Branch. HSU lost the first game of the day 3-2 in 10 innings against LeTourneau.
Megann Lewis tossed a three-hitter at ETBU as she struck out four in the complete-game win. She improved to 2-3 on the season with the win. Erin Garcia took the loss as she allowed only three hits and one earned run.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Cowgirls played plated a run. Shelby McIntyre had a one-out single and moved to second on a Laura Rawlings sacrifice bunt. Mackenzie Clay walked and Kelsey Cogdell reached on an error to load the bases. Jodi Hierholzer then drew a bases loaded walk.
HSU played small ball for an insurance run in the sixth inning. Amy Meyer led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Blair Wallace. Taylor Namey bunted Meyer to third and McIntyre drove her in with a single to right.
McIntyre had two of the Cowgirls' three hits and Meyer had the other.
In the LeTourneau game, Sarah Shurbet went nine and two-third innings and scattered 12 hits. She allowed only one earned run. Katie Stephenson went the distance striking out five and allowing eight hits for LeTourneau.
HSU scored a single run in the first when Namey scored after doubling and a LeTourneau error. LU scored two runs on three hits.
HSU tied the game in the seventh when Clay scored on an error. The teams went to the International Tiebreaker in the 10th and the Cowgirls failed to score. LeTourneau then bunted over Jessica Cepak and drove her in with a sacrifice fly.
Meyer, Hierholzer, Namey and Clay had two hits each for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls are now 3-7 on the year and will play Louisiana College at 10 a.m. on Saturday, before a rematch with ETBU at 3 p.m.
