AUSTIN, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' softball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Concordia on Friday evening at Cedar Park High School, losing 8-2 in the first game and coming back for a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
Game 1
Concordia jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the third inning and cruised to the 8-2 win in game one. Carol Swindell allowed four runs in two and one-third innings to fall to 4-10 on the year. Kat Moreno went the distance and struck out nine batters to improve to 10-6.
Six different Cowgirls had one hit each in the game. Erin Duhon led Concordia with three hits.
Concordia scored on a Duhon double and a Christina Martin fielder's choice in the first and Martin had a two-run home run in the third.
HSU narrowed the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth with a pair of runs. Mac Clay fielder's choice RBI and also scored a run on an error.
Concordia added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Meghan Ferrell had a two-run double in the sixth.
Game 2
Brittany Acosta fired a five-hitter for the Cowgirls to improve to 7-10 on the year in the circle. She allowed just one run in the complete-game win. Sydney Coffey allowed three runs in four and one-third innings to take the loss in the circle.
HSU scored all three runs in the fifth inning. Mac Clay walked with one out and scored on an RBI double by Carley Willis. Julia Bradley followed with an RBI single and moved to second on the throw to the plate and she later scored on a Terra Davis RBI single.
Concordia scored a single run on three hits in the sixth. Katie Carrizales had the RBI single.
Willis, Davis and Shelby McIntyre had two hits each for HSU and five different Tornado players had one hit each.
HSU is now 11-20-1 on the year and 9-9 in ASC play. Concordia fell to 19-13 overall and 8-10 in conference action. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at noon.
