Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team opened its 2014-15 season with a 75-67 win over Colorado College late Saturday night in Colorado Springs.
Kourtney Holyfield scored 19 points and hit six 3-pointers to pace the Cowgirls and Taylor Klement had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cowgirls jumped out to an early 16-4 lead 5:15 into the game. Holyfield hit three 3-pointers in the run and Klement had five points. HSU never trailed in the game.
CC cut the Cowgirl lead to 21-18 with 7:23 to play in the first half, but HSU answered with a 13-4 run to push the lead back to 34-22 with 2:41 to play in the half. The Cowgirls eventually led 36-28 at halftime.
HSU pushed its lead out to as many as 21 at 69-48 with 4:52 to play. CC made a late push to cut it 74-67 but the Cowgirls held off the Tigers down the stretch.
The Cowgirl defense held CC to 32.3 percent shooting for the game and outrebounded the Tigers 52-41.
Joanna Daniel had a solid floor game as she posted six points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Danielle Davis had 31 points for the Tigers to lead all scorers.
HSU will play Nebraska Wesleyan at 5 p.m. central time on Sunday.
