Box Score MARSHALL, Texas – Sara Vargas tied her career high with 25 points to lead the Hardin-Simmons women's basketball team to an 84-64 American Southwest Conference win over East Texas Baptist on Thursday evening at Ornelas Gym in Marshall.
The teams went back-and-forth in the first half and HSU led 28-27 with 3:01 to play in the half. The Cowgirls then closed the half on a 9-0 run to take their biggest lead of the first half 37-27 into intermission.
HSU never led by less than six points in the second half and led 63-48 with 10:29 to play. ETBU made one last push and cut it to 70-63 with 2:57 to play in the game, but HSU scored the next 10 points to secure the victory.
Vargas led four Cowgirls in double figures with 25. She scored 21 of the 25 in the second half. Joanna Daniel had a big game for the Cowgirls with 13 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals and no turnovers in 36 minutes of action. Seniors Taylor Klement and Rachel Holik each had 12 points in the contest.
Amanda Rucker led ETBU with 22 points and 6-6 post player Amber Carver added 18.
The Cowgirls had a huge night at the charity stripe, hitting 29-of-33, including 13-of-14 in the first half. HSU also had just nine turnovers and turned 13 ETBU turnovers into 16 points.
The Cowgirls are now 11-11 on the year and 9-8 in league play. East Texas Baptist fell to 9-13 overall and 5-12 in conference play. HSU will play at LeTourneau on Saturday in Longview.
