ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team swept Austin College, 6-2 and 10-0, in non-conference action at Ellis Field on Tuesday.
Game 1
The Cowgirls used its speed at the top of the lineup to generate the offense for the win in the first game.
Breanna Greer led off the first with a bunt single and stole second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Braleigh Middleton brought her home with a triple over the centerfielder's head to make it 1-0.
AC scored a run in the second on an errant pickoff attempt to tie the game but the Cowgirls retook the lead with a run in the second as
Ashley Brown had a bunt single that brought home
Christa Garcia. Beth Massey tied the game for AC in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Beth Massey.
HSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
M.J. Ledkins led off the inning with a pinch-hit single and Greer and Brown had bunt singles. Brown's drove home Ledkins and Middleton brought home Greer on a squeeze bunt and
Alexis Vines drove in Brown with an RBI double.
Greer did it again in the sixth when she reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Brown, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
Greer had four hits for the Cowgirls. Massey and Kat Wright each had two hits to pace the Kangaroos.
Lexie Allen worked four innings for the win to improve to 3-4. She allowed just two unearned runs on five hits.
Genia Jones worked the final three innings for the save, allowing just two hits and no runs. Tori Herrera allowed six runs on 11 hits to fall to 0-7 on the year.
Game 2
The Cowgirls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Alexis Vines had an RBI groundout,
Ashley Brown scored on a wild pitch and
Lauren Williams had a sacrifice fly to score Middleton.
HSU added two more runs in the second on RBI singles by
Kirsten Kenyon and Middleton. In the third,
Katelyn Joyner had an RBI single and later scored on an error and Brown added an RBI single.
The Cowgirls added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Joyner.
Joyner had three hits and drove in three runs for the Cowgirls and Brown, Ledkins, Garcia and Kenyon had two hits each for the Cowgirls. Massey had two of the six hits for AC.
Chloe Brignac worked four scoreless innings to improve to 3-2. She scattered five hits and did not allow a run.
Lara Ammermann worked a scoreless inning. Wright took the loss for AC allowing eight runs on 10 hits in three innings of work.
HSU is now 7-9 on the year and will host Louisiana College this weekend in American Southwest Conference play. Austin College fell to 3-11 on the year.
