ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team opened its final series of the year with a 13-7 loss to LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference action at Ellis Field on a windy Friday afternoon in Abilene.
The Cowgirls opened the scoring in the first inning with a pair of runs. Kirsten Kenyon had an RBI single in the inning and Lexie Allen had an RBI groundout to shortstop.
LeTourneau scored four times in the third inning. Bailey Woodard had the big blow a three-run double and Woodard later came around to score on a throwing error. Woodard added a two-run home run in the fifth inning to push the lead to 6-2.
Macey Mize added to the lead in the sixth with a two-run double. HSU scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Cierra Woodyard RBI triple. LeTourneau added five runs in the top of the seventh inning.
HSU added four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Hillarie Carpenter had an RBI single. Taylor Lopez added an RBI single, Amanda Tokanuga had an RBI double and Rachel Dugan an RBI groundout.
Julie Martinez started for LeTourneau and worked an inning before Ashley Burdine worked the final six innings. Burdine picked up the win. Gabby Ortega took the loss for HSU allowing six runs in four and one-third inning. Genia Salazar worked the final two and two-third innings.
Kenyon led the Cowgirls with three hits and Ethel Warren, Mize, Woodard and Shelby Barrick had two hits each for LeTourneau.
The Cowgirls are now 1-35 on the year and 1-27 in league play and will close the season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. HSU will honor Kenyon and Salazar on senior day. LeTourneau improved to 13-20 overall and 9-16 in league play.
