Box Score BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team beat top-seeded Mary Hardin-Baylor 2-0 on Friday evening in Belton to advance to the American Southwest Conference Championship match on Sunday.
The Cowboys had an advantage in the first half with seven shots to four in the half and the Cowboys had seven corner kicks and four shots on goal but the game remained scoreless at halftime.
Osi Gutierrez put the Cowboys on the board early in the second half when he scored at the 46:53 mark. It was his third goal in two games in the ASC Tournament.
HSU added another goal in the 68th minute when Jakob Fiol set up Daniel Guillen and the freshman delivered his first career goal.
For the game, the Cowboys had a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Reid Applewhite had a pair of saves to earn the win in goal for HSU.
HSU improved to 9-6-2 and UMHB fell to 13-4 on the year. The Cru had gone through league play undefeated.
The Cowboys will be looking for their 10th title and the first since 2014 when it plays Concordia in the championship on Sunday at 1 p.m.
