Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team won the ASC quarterfinal 4-1 against the ETBU Tigers on Thursday night at the HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene.
The victory in the first round will advance the Cowboy soccer team to the semifinal of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament to be played next Thursday night.
The Cowboys started fast and got a goal from J.J. Sissen in the third minute off a Maxwell Winneker throw in to take a 1-0 lead.
The Sissen show continued in the 23rd minute, when brother Jack Sissen scored after a ball in from Osi Gutierrez to make it 2-0 Cowboys early.
The Tigers scored off the foot of Garret Garvin on a counter in the 26th minute to close the gap, but freshman Jakob Fiol went for goal for the Cowboys in the 35th minute to make it 3-1 Cowboys at half.
Fiol added a second goal after corralling a rebound in the 68th minute, and the Cowboys cruised to the 4-1 finish in the ASC quarterfinal game.
The Cowboys had 13 shots and six on goal in the contest while ETBU had six shots and two on frame. The Cowboys led with seven corner kicks to two for the Tiger.
Reid Applewhite started in goal for the Cowboys and had one save in the win. The Tiger keeper was Gunner Barry, and he had two saves in the loss.
The Cowboys improve to 8-4 on the season and will play next Thursday night at the HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene for a chance at a spot in the ASC Championship game set for Saturday.
