ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team won two games against the Fontbonne University Griffons on Thursday by final scores of 9-1 and 7-1.

The Cowgirls hosted the Griffons for a doubleheader on Thursday at Ellis Field in Abilene heading into spring break week.

Game one got off to a solid start with seven Cowgirl runs in the first two inning. HSU scored on an error in the first before opening up the bats in the second.

Sarah Polanco got an RBI off a dropped fly ball to start the second, and Karis Hessert drove in two more with a single. Graduate senior Peyton Newman poked one through the right side to score another and Mason McCord cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to make it a 7-0 Cowgirl lead.

Fontbonne got one back in the third inning on what would be the only bump in the road for Haven Williams, who only allowed five hits in five innings with the one run pitching for the Cowgirls with a strikeout.

Polanco took a walk to earn another RBI in the fifth and Faith Fernandez got an infield single to the shortstop to call the game at 9-1 in the fifth inning for the Cowgirl win.

Newman led the Cowgirls with three hits while Kadi Downs, Hessert, and Fernandez each added a pair of hits as well. Williams pitched for the win in five innings, her third win of the season.

Game two on the day saw another early Cowgirl lead after McCord launched a ball out of right field to score three in the first inning.

Newman drove in another Cowgirl run in the third and McCord put a double to the corner in left to score another making it 5-0 Cowgirls after three.

Polanco and McCord each hit RBI singles in the sixth to make it 7-0 Hardin-Simmons before the Griffons scored on an Abby Alonzo solo homerun in the final inning to finish 7-1 with another Cowgirl victory.

Kaylen Washington had a magnificent day pitching for the Cowgirls, allowing just three hits in the complete game with a career-high 11 Ks in the game.

Polanco and McCord each had three hits in the game to lead the Cowgirls. McCord added five RBIs in the game. Haley Henson had two hits for the Cowgirls and added a pair of steals as well.

The Cowgirls move to 11-5 on the season and will host the Austin College Roos on Tuesday at Ellis field for two games beginning at 1 p.m.
