Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowboy baseball team dropped a doubleheader with Texas Lutheran on Friday night, going down 13-5 and 16-9 in two games at John J. Hunter Field.
The Cowboys started off with the lead in game one in the second inning up 2-0 thanks to a
Justin Blancaflor RBI-double and a wild pitch to score. The Bulldogs took the lead in the fourth and added runs late to take the Cowboys 13-5.
HSU had 13 hits in game one and one error.
Brock Calvillo led the Cowboys with three hits including a bomb over the trees in right field for two RBIs in the fifth inning.
Baylan Vaughan,
Jacob Hollingsworth, and
Cannon Negron each had two hits for HSU in the first game on Friday.
Jimmy Mathis and Blancaflor finished with an RBI each.
Jace Martinez started and pitched four innings in the loss on seven hits and five runs.
Johnny Follett threw an inning of clean work with a strikeout and Brady Bennet and
Caleb Smith finished the game for the Cowboys with one and two strikeouts, respectively.
The Bulldogs came out ahead early in game two with four runs in the first inning. The Cowboys got on the board in the fifth but not until TLU was up 14-0.
Hardin-Simmons scored on a sac fly by Calvillo in the fifth inning. The Cowboys dropped an eight-piece of their own in the seventh inning to make it 14-9. They could not complete the comeback and fell 16-9.
The Cowboys capped the big scoring inning with a three-run homer from Blancaflor out to center. He led the team with three RBIs.
Vaughan had five hits in six tries against the Bulldogs in game two in the leadoff spot.
Jacob Posey started at pitcher for the Cowboys and threw four innings in the loss with nine runs on nine hits.
Wilson Walling threw, and
Bradley Fletcher finished with over four innings of five-git baseball with three strikeouts.
The Cowboys drop to 2-7 and will face the Bulldogs again for two more games on Saturday beginning at 12 noon at John J. Hunter Field in Abilene.
