Cowboys Hold On For 26-24 Win

MARSHALL, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' football team responded from last week's loss with its best defensive performance of the year and handed East Texas Baptist its first conference loss of the season, 26-24, Saturday afternoon at Ornelas Stadium.

East Texas Baptist took a 3-0 lead on a Kyle Pope first quarter field goal. HSU came right back and scored on a Justin Feaster touchdown on a quarterback sneak. The PAT was missed wide right and HSU led 6-3 with 6:41 to play in the first half.

The Cowboys then had back-to-back big plays. ZaVious Robbins scored on a 79-yard pass from Feaster, who had scrambled away from pressure and found Robbins behind the secondary. Then on ETBU's next possession, Brentdrick Walker intercepted a Thad Fortune pass and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown. After the PAT was blocked, HSU led 19-3 with :39 to play in the first half.

Ruben Robinson scored on a 4-yard TD pass from Fortune to cut it to 19-10 and then HSU struck on the very next play as Mychal Carrillo hit Travis Watson a 64-yard touchdown on a halfback pass to make it 26-10.

ETBU then scored on a Robinson 22 yard pass from Fortune to make it 26-17 and Jair Stover scored later to make it 26-24 with 9:47 to play.

HSU made a big stop with ETBU driving when Eric Daniels picked off a Fortune pass. HSU got a fourth down stop with just over two minutes remaining to seal the game.

Feaster completed 18-of-32 passes for 281 yards and Mychal Carrillo had nine catches for 117 yards and Travis Watson had 127 yards on five catches.Carrillo had 117 yards receiving, 50 yards on a punt return and threw a 64-yard touchdown pass.

HSU is now 3-3 on the year and 3-1 in ASC play. ETBU fell to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in league play. HSU will host Howard Payne for Homecoming next Saturday at 2 p.m.
