Mary Hardin-Baylor came into the game ranked second in the nation, and they proved why with a 47-14 beating of Hardin-Simmons Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference football action at Shelton Stadium in Abilene.
The Cru came out firing from the opening kickoff. Derrick Williams picked off a Justin Feaster pass on the first series of the game and Jarvis Thrasher took UMHB's first play from scrimmage 37 yards for a touchdown with 11:22 remaining in the first quarter.
UMHB then made it 10-0 on a Joel Munoz 28-yard field goal. HSU the moved the ball to the Cru 10, but Chad Hilton sacked Feaster and forced a fumble to end the drive. UMHB went 76 yards in seven plays as Josh Welch hit Patrick Oliver on a 16-yard touchdown pass.
HSU came right back with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Justin Feaster to Justice Baker. Thrasher then capped a 13-play, 91-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:52 to play to make it 24-7.
The Cowboys came right back with a touchdown, a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Feaster. HSU then appeared to have the Cru stopped and would get good field position, but UMHB converted a fake punt on fourth down for a first down deep in their own territory,
The second half was all Cru as the Cowboys had just 22 yards of total offense. Thraher had a touchdown run and Quincy Daniels added a pair of short touchdown runs.
Fesater completed 17-of-29 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. Welch was 11-of-17 for 192 yards. Patrick Oliver had seven catches for 137 yards for UMHB. UMHB won the total yardage battle 555-223.
Michael Tracy had 18 tackles for the Cowboys and Eric Henri and Jerrell Freeman had 11 and 10 respectively for UMHB.
HSU fell to 2-3 on the year and 2-1 in league play. UMHB improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The winner of this game has won or shared every ASC title since 1998. It is the first time the Cowboys have lost three games in a season since 1997.
