ABILENE, Texas -
Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team could not buy a basket in a 20-for-75 shooting display and was beaten 74-49 in its American Southwest Conference opener against LeTourneau, Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowboys went 7-for-34 for 20.6 percent in the first half, while LeTourneau was hitting 18-of-31 shots and going 7-for-11 from 3-point range. The Yellow Jackets stormed out to a 43-20 lead at halftime.
It was more of the same for the Cowboys in the second half. HSU could not make shots until late in the game, but still finished shooting 26.7 percent in the game. The Cowboys did force 29 turnovers from LeTourneau.
The Cowboys top scorer Marcus Smith went 1-for-13 with two points. Mardochee Jean had a double double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Charlie Pannell had 12 points.
LeTourneau was led by Jesse Hayes, who poured in 20 points and hit six 3-pointers.
HSU fell to 1-3 on the year and 1-0 in league play. LeTourneau improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. HSU will host East Texas Baptist on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
