ABILENE, Texas - After its first five games
went down to the last possession, Hardin-Simmons' football team
finally got a chance to breath in the fourth quarter with a 40-12
win over American Southwest Conference foe East Texas Baptist,
Saturday in front of a homecoming crowd of 3,387 at Shelton
Stadium.
The Cowboys took the opening drive 68 yards in 11 plays and Matt
Fields kicked a 24-yard field goal to give HSU a quick 3-0 lead.
After forcing a punt on the ensuing possession the Cowboys drove 95
yards in 10 plays and Justin Feaster capped it with a 1-yard
quarterback sneak for the touchdown. Fields PAT made it 10-0.
HSU's defense came up with an interception on its next trip to
the field. Ricky Poe had the first of his two interceptions on the
day. In all the Cowboys picked off four Stephen Oehlschlaeger
passes.
After the teams traded punts, HSU went 59 yards in seven plays
and Feaster found ZaVious Robbins in the back of the endzone to
make it 17-0. ETBU came right back and went 79 yards in 13 plays
and Oehlschlaeger found Tyler Simmons for a 7-yard score. Each team
added a field goal before half to make it 20-10 at the break.
HSU's defense came out strong in the second half and did not
allow a point. ETBU received a safety when the Cowboys snapped the
ball through the end zone on a punt. The Cowboys picked off three
second half passes.
The Cowboy offense rolled in the second half as well. Feaster
had three touchdown passes in the second half - to Derrick Grant,
Robbins and Mychal Carrillo.
Feaster completed 23-of-33 passes for 300 yards and four TDs in
the game. Carrillo had nine catches for 94 yards.
HSU is now 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in American Southwest
Conference action. ETBU fell to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in conference
play. The Cowboys play at Howard Payne next Saturday at 1 p.m.
