MARSHALL, Texas — Alexander Wymore hit a
37-yard field goal with :37 to play as the Hardin-Simmons football
team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 13-10 win over East
Texas Baptist in American Southwest Conference action at Ornelas
Stadium in Marshall.
HSU led 10-7 until the 7:51 mark of the fourth quarter when Kyle
Pope hit a 34-yard field goal to tie the game. On the ensuing
kickoff, Devin Carver slipped down catching the ball pinning the
Cowboys inside the 10-yard line.
On the first play, Byrd was sacked and on the next play he threw an
interception that was run back for a touchdown by Victor Flores,
but ETBU was called for an illegal block on the runback.
HSU's defense held and Pope missed a 38-yard field goal wide
left.
HSU then took over the ball at the 21-yard line after the kickoff.
Derrick Grant ran four straight plays for a total of 32 yards on
the drive. After a false start, Byrd hit Justice Baker on a 7-yard
pass. Grant then went 16 yards on third-and-two to the ETBU 29. HSU
moved it down to the 20 but was stuffed just short on third down
and out trotted the confident freshman Wymore. He drilled the
37-yarder right through the uprights to give the Cowboys a 13-10
lead.
On ETBU's possession, backup quarterback Seth Hubbard was
picked off by Cooper Haralson.
The Cowboys got on the board first as they moved the ball down the
field on its first possession going 40 yards on 15 plays, but had
to settle for a 29-yard field goal by Wymore.
East Texas Baptist then took the ball and went 71 yards in 16 play
to take the lead 7-3 on the first play of the second quarter. Sed
Harris capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. HSU then went
59 yards in nine plays and Taylor Byrd gave the Cowboys a 10-7 lead
with 4:38 to play in the first half with a quarterback sneak for a
touchdown.
It was a wet and sloppy night in Marshall and neither team had much
success offensively. HSU had just 218 yards of offense and ETBU was
limited to 195. Byrd completed 5-of-11 passes for 32 yards and
ETBUT had only 15 passing yards. Derrick Grant had 105 yards on 18
carries for the Cowboys. Michael Tracy and Paul Girard each had 10
tackles to pace the Cowboy defensive effort.
HSU is now 2-4 on the season and 1-3 in ASC play. East Texas
Baptist fell to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in ASC action. The Cowboys will
return home to play Howard Payne next week for Homecoming.
